The beginning

I have been lucky enough to have travelled around the world as a child. In 1985 when I was 5 years old my parents embarked on a sailing trip on a custom built 47 foot sailboat named Fleur du Cap. What was supposed to be a short trip(3-6 mos), turned into a 3 and a half year world cruising adventure/obsession for my parents and their three children(anyone interested in this trip can read my mothers newsletters from the boat trip @ markvanniekerk.co.za[use IE browser]). Now 21 years later my father has built a 47 foot catamaran named "Life's A Dream" and plans to charter the untouched waters from the first trip (mainly the South Pacific). I have been lucky enough to be asked to crew with him for the first few legs of the journey. My blog which you are currently reading will chronicle my adventures on the high seas as well as all the locales and islands inbetween. The full story of the boat with pictures is available at my fathers blog (unemployedsailor.blogspot.com). I highly recommend checking out his site as it is very comprehensive and has great pictures.
